比较文学 is a Bi-Co (Bryn Mawr and Haverford) program that draws on the diverse teaching and research interests of the faculty at the two colleges. Our allied faculty includes professors in 阿拉伯语, 中国人。, 经典, 英语, 电影研究, 法国, 德国, 意大利, 日本, 音乐, 哲学, 俄罗斯, 西班牙语, 和戏剧.

The study of 比较文学 situates 文学 in an international perspective; examines transnational cultural connections through literary 历史, 文学批评, 批判理论, aesthetics and poetics; and works toward a nuanced understanding of the socio-cultural functions of 文学. The structure of the program allows students to engage in such diverse areas of critical inquiry as East-West cultural relations, global censorship and human rights, 移民研究, 电影历史与理论, and aesthetics of modernity. 因此, interpretive methods from other disciplines also play a role in the comparative study of 文学; among these are anthropology, 区域研究, 古典研究, 民族学, 性别研究, 历史, 艺术史, 哲学, 和宗教.

Besides representing literary and cultural study with a global reach, the 比较文学 major aims to develop student analytic and interpretive skills that are the hallmark of liberal arts education. By promoting sustained engagement with language(s) and texts, our program encourages majors to become attuned to the complexities of human communication within and across many borders. The program offers a rich variety of courses that are international and interdisciplinary. We encourage our students to study abroad either for a summer term or a semester, or, 在某些情况下, for two semesters and try to place them in programs that best meet their linguistic and academic needs. The students begin the major with the core course, “Introduction to 比较文学” and end with the “Senior Seminar,” where their capstone experience involves writing a senior thesis that draws on various forms of analyzing arts, 文学, 和文化.

Our students have been recipients of many prestigious awards, including Fulbright 德国 Academic Exchange, 安德鲁·米. Mellon, Max Kade, and Watson fellowships. Alumni surveys have consistently reflected the high satisfaction rate of our graduates who have gone on to highly selective graduate schools, 法学院, 出版, 国际业务, 外交事业, and rewarding work in NGOs (non-governmental organizations).
